To the Editor of The Freeport Journal-Standard:

I'm writing about the thoughtful column by Georgette Braun: "Belvidere
woman seeks guidance from educators" (10-11-15).
It seems to me that all Illinois adults should have the freedom of
choice to use cannabis. Not just those who need it to treat
disease.

Cannabis not only relieves pain and suffering but it also prevents many
diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. Cannabis is
one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory substances on the planet and
chronic inflammation is the root cause of most
diseases of the human body.

I strongly urge the readers to read: THE POT BOOK: A Complete Guide to
Cannabis: Its role in medicine, politics, science and
culture." It is edited by Julie Holland, MD.

From: John Chase <>

Sent to Tampa Bay Times

The letter, "Fighting Crime, Drugs", 15 Oct, tells how drug prisoners
sent to prison on mandatory sentences are more willing to cooperate with
prosecutors, and complains that the "liberal media" ignore the societal
damage done by illegal drug dealing when they demonize mandatory
sentencing for "nonviolent" drug crimes.

The writer -- and most of the media -- miss the fundamental problem of
mandatory sentencing: it transfers courtroom power from the judge and
jury to the prosecutor, by mandating the sentence according to the drug
charges the prosecutor chooses to bring. The easiest charge to prove is
"drug conspiracy", because it takes only the testimony of a cooperating
defendant, often a boyfriend cooperating with prosecutors, to convict.
It is the reason the female prison population is expanding at a rate
larger than the male prison population, both federal and state. In
Florida prisons, the population of female prisoners is increasing at a
rate four times that of the male population, according to the U.S.
Department of Justice Statistics. This disparity is caused mostly by
mandatory sentencing for drug conspiracy, an inherently nonviolent crime.

To the Editor of The Star-Tribune:

I agree with Charles Lane that very few are sentenced to prison for just
marijuana use--unless
they are on probation or parole. Then they are sent to or back to prison
for testing positive
for any drug use.
