Last year 76 police officers were killed on the job and 824 construction
workers were killed on the job.
The U. S. has more slightly more construction workers than police
officers. So what is so dangerous about being
a police officer?

Re: Faceoff: Excessive force or skewed facts in Garner case? 15 Dec

These different viewpoints are both true, but they deal with the
here-and-now. It is important to know how we got here. Profiling began
in Slavery. When Slavery was outlawed in the mid-1860s, Jim Crow Laws
were enacted in the South. Jim Crow let Blacks rise if they stayed apart
from Whites. When Jim Crow was outlawed in the mid-1960s, the resulting
social turmoil moved President Nixon to observe in 1969 that "[....] you
have to face the fact that the whole problem is really the blacks. The
key is to devise a system that recognizes this while not appearing to"
The "system" was the Controlled Substances Act, signed by Nixon in 1970.
He knew that outlawing a commercial product would enrich an illegal
market and draw in unskilled men to deal in that market. It worked as he
intended. The Drug War has marginalized millions of Americans, mostly
unskilled Blacks and Browns, by tarring them with life-long felony
records. Ending racial profiling cannot begin until we end the Drug War.
