Re: Letter "Pot Not Medicine" 01 December
Let's stay on topic. The issue is "Would legal medical marijuana be a
net benefit for Florida voters?" The letter writer rolls out some of the
same tired reasons used to sell the drug war. Let's look at them.
1. Medical marijuana is simply "street pot that contains contaminants
such as pesticides, fertilizers and fungi". Somewhat true, thanks to a
drug war that forces marijuana underground. The same was true in
the 1920s when bootleggers stretched their supply by adding wood alcohol
to good liquor. It was fixed by ending National Prohibition; the same
will be true by ending marijuana prohibition.
2. Marijuana is "addictive and has been linked to harms such as cancer,
schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, and respiratory diseases....
and been shown to suppress the immune system..." Marijuana, as compared
to legal substances, does not cause those ailments. On the contrary,
marijuana, even "street pot", is the best treatment for some of them.
The only explanation for such a biased letter is simply that the writer
does not trust people to make decisions for themselves and must be
coerced into line by the criminal justice system. After four decades of
trying harder each year, but achieving none of the claimed benefits, it
is time to try something else.

Just curious, how much tobacco that contains nicotine is grown in our
national parks
and on other government land? None. None whatsoever. Why? It's legal.
Criminalize tobacco and the situation will soon change.

I'm writing about Yavapai County attorney Sheila Polk's letter: "Busting medical-pot study myth" (12-2-13).
Marijuana is not really a drug but rather a natural herb that has healing properties. Since it is a natural
herb it cannot be patented. Because it cannot be patented drug companies have no financial incentive to
research and study it.
I'd like to add that the only issue Gena Mecagni,MD failed to cover regarding your off-target editorial
was why a lot more men than women use medical marijuana. Men tend to engage in activities that cause
chronic pain. Such as fighting in wars, playing competitive sports like football and working in
heavy construction.
Sitting in front of a keyboard usually doesn't cause chronic pain.

To the Editor of The Democrat Herald:
So the cops want to keep marijuana completely unregulated, untaxed and
controlled by
criminal gangs. Why? Because they love "policing for profit."
Throughout the United States rape kits are going unused and murders are
going unsolved for one major reason: the War on Drugs. I urge the
readers to view this short video featuring the former LAPD Deputy Chief
of Police Stephen Downing: http://tinyurl.com/b3juxa4.
There is no financial incentive for police agencies to solve murders or
rapes, however, there are major incentives to confiscate drug money.
Before the drug war, police were credited with solving 91 percent of the
murders in the U.S. Today, they solve 61 percent.
In drug transactions, there are willing buyers and willing sellers. In
rapes or murders there are unwilling victims. I want our police to
protect me against people who want to harm me against my will. Not myself.
