To the Editor of The Freeport Journal-Standard:
Once upon a time there was no drug-related crime in the United States.
Every day people could purchase all the heroin, cocaine, marijuana or
morphine they wanted at the corner grocery store for pennies per dose
with no questions asked.
Back then we had 1.3 percent of our adult citizens addicted to drugs.
Because of that the U.S. Congress passed the Harrison Narcotics Act of
1914. Because of that drug addiction went from being a health problem
to becoming a criminal justice problem. And because of that our overall
crime rate soared.
And in 1970 we still had a drug addiction rate of 1.3 percent. Because
of that Congress passed the Narcotics Control Act of 1971. Because of
that the United States became the most incarcerated nation in history
with 2.3 million prisoners.
Today we still have 1.3 percent of our adults addicted to drugs. So
far, we have spent more than a trillion dollars attempting to nullify
the law of supply and demand. Should we throw another trillion dollars
down the drug war rat hole? Or do something different?

To the Editor of The Hi-Desert Star:
I'm writing about: "Raids on marijuana farms reveal drug-trafficking
rings" (9-21-13).
I'm sure that many marijuana growers, sellers and traffickers are
thankful to the police for this latest marijuana bust and others like it.
Without operations like this, marijuana would be worth what other
easy-to-grow weeds are worth -- very little. Thanks to the Drug
Enforcement Administration and other so-called "drug warriors," the
easy-to-grow weed is worth almost as much as pure gold -- and completely
tax-free.
Any marijuana growers, sellers or traffickers arrested will soon be
replaced. They always are.

I submit that 100 percent of hard drug users started with either baby
formula or
Mother's milk. Should we criminalize these substances?

To the Editor of The Daily Courier:
I'm writing about Bob Gordon's thoughtful letter: "Keeping marijuana
illegal doesn't work" (9-25-13).
I'd like to add that those who think that marijuana prohibition somehow
protects our children and society, I'd like them to search on Google or
Yjoutube for "Retired Police
Captain demolishes the war on drugs."
You will see that marijuana prohibition substantially increases all
other crime. Back in the 1960s, police solved more than 90 percent of
all homicides. Today they solve just over 60 percent. Why? Because of
our so-called war on drugs. There are huge financial incentives for
police to make drug busts and confiscate the drug dealers' money and
property, but no financial incentive to solve rapes, robberies or murders.
