Editors -

Two recent letters speak out against legalizing marijuana. If their
reason for writing was Morgan & Morgan's project to put medical
marijuana on the 2014 ballot, they need to check their facts. One letter
(Sept 7th) asks, Why legalize the smokĀing of drugs to create a further
burden on the health care system and send the wrong message to kids? The
other letter (Sept 10th) worries about "a nation full of mindless people
wanting to drive while being legally high" Fact is that most patients do
not "smoke". Instead, they use a vaporizer or injest it in food. As for
driving "high", the first 16 states to legalize medical marijuana(as of
2011) saw a 9% decrease in traffic fatalities, a decrease in beer
consumption and no increase in teen pot smoking. I'd venture that
neither writer has ever been close to a patient who had tried every
prescription drug and found relief only when show how to use marijuana.

To the Editor of The Standard-Examiner:

I'm writing about the not-so-thoughtful letter from Sheriff Bubba Brown:
"Legalizing marijuana would harm
society" (9-9-13).

I thought was a conservative and that true conservatives oppose
nanny-state policies. Obviously, I was wrong.

What could be more pro-nanny-state than marijuana prohibition?

Beyond the fact that marijuana prohibition is counterproductive and a
complete waste of money, what about the right of adult citizens to be
left alone - especially in the privacy of our own homes?

We don't punish those who attempt suicide and survive. So why do we
punish those who consume the wrong (politically selected) recreational
drugs?

I don't want my government attempting to protect me from myself. I want
my government to protect me from those who want to harm me against my will.

Today, our nanny-state government tells us which recreational drugs we
may or may not consume. Note that Viagra is OK, but marijuana is not.
Note that nicotine is OK, but marijuana is not.

Tomorrow, our nanny-state government will tell us which foods we may or
may not eat.

Those who oppose the use of marijuana, medical or otherwise, can opt to
not buy it, grow it or use it.

To the Editor of The Sacramento News & Review:

Re: "NFL should allow players to use marijuana" (9-12-13).

So why does the NFL care weather any player uses marijuana instead of
alcohol during their off time? Money. And lots of it.

What industry spends the most on TV advertising for sporting events? The
beer industry.

As marijuana use increases, beer consumption goes down. The beer
industry knows this. And this is one of the major reasons marijuana
remains a criminalized substance.
