To the Editor of The Arizona Republic:

Thanks for publishing Roy Miller's thoughtful letter: "Prohibition is
repeating
itself" (12-2-11). I'd like to add that Ken Burns' outstanding PBS
documentary
revealed that the alcohol cartels had hundreds of politicians on their
payroll.

Is it unreasonable to suspect that the drug cartels also have hundred of
politicians on their payroll? If they do, would they support
politicians who
want to put them out of business by repealing marijuana prohibition?

Stated more accurately, this was a prohibition-related double murder.
Labels are important. While true that stamping out drugs would have
prevented this murder, it is impossible to do. Ending prohibition would
have been easier, and equally effective. We Americans learned that
lesson when we tried to stamp out alcohol in the 1920s and finally gave
up in 1933.

To the Editor of The Longview Daily News:

Major kudos for your outstanding editorial: "Federal reclassification of
marijuana a smart move"
(12-11-11). Is there any legitimate reason that a natural herb that has
never killed anybody
should be classified the same as heroin? I think not.

I know from personal experience that marijuana is a substitute for
potentially deadly painkillers
like Vicodin and is also a substitute for alcohol. The pharmaceutical
industry knows this and
so does the alcohol industry. And this is probably why marijuana
remains a criminalized
substance.
