Re: "MARIJUANA SHOULD BE QUASI-LEGAL" (10-28-11).
It seems to me that marijuana should be fully legal, not quasi-legal.
Only fully legal products can be regulated, controlled and taxed by
any government agency. Only fully legal products are of known
quality, known purity and known potency.

Re: Letter, "Heroin's presence already being felt in S. Florida",Nov 1st.
Our legislators acted with the best intentions when acted to shut down
pill mills. Now they should do something about the root cause of opiate
addiction. First, understand that forcing hard core addicts to the
street will cause more societal damage than it prevents. The
conservative Swiss fixed their opiate addiction problem by accepting the
reality that some addicts simply can't be cured. Rather than force them
to the street they allow them to register for "Heroin Assisted
Treatment" (HAT) and greatly expanded the availability of methadone as a
maintenance drug. The program is so successful that even the UN Office Of
Drug Control has quit complaining about the Swiss HAT.

Re: Editorial, "Battling Pill Mills"
The new law is necessary as a short term fix. Now Florida legialators
should try for a permanent solution. First, they should accept the
reality that some addicts simply can't be cured. If they can't get
pills, they'll inject heroin; not all of them of course, but enough to
increase the load on police and social services. The Swiss solution was
to greatly expand the availability of methadone maintenance and allow
addicts to register for "Heroin Assisted Treatment" to move them to
methadone. The program began in 1994 as an experiment and is now
permanent. It is so successful that even the UN Office Of Drug Control
has quit complaining about the Swiss. We should try it.

To the Editor of The Chicago Sun-Times:
Kudos to Frank Main for his outstanding column: "DUPAGE MOM SAYS
MARIJUANA 'LIKE A FINE GLASS OF WINE,' SHOULD BE LEGAL"
(11-4-11). I'd like to add that I have been using marijuana on and off for
43 years. I live in a mostly senior subdivision, yet within 75 feet of my
home I know at least five frequent users of marijuana.
I believe that the estimated 17 million marijuana users is very low. If
someone from the government asked me if I use marijuana, I would deny it.
And so would the vast majority of other marijuana users.
