To the Editor of The Rockford Register Star:
I'm writing about Norman Bleed's not-so-thoughtful letter: "Don't
legalize drugs" (10-17-11). Apparently Bleed wants to keep marijuana
and other substances completely unregulated, untaxed and controlled by
criminal gangs--just like alcohol was when it was illegal.
Do I suggest that all drugs should be sold like they were 100 years ago
in grocery stores and pharmacies with no questions asked? No.
For hard drugs like heroin and cocaine I suggest that we adopt the Swiss
drug policy. Switzerland used to have a very serious heroin addiction
problem. Now their heroin problem is a small fraction of what it used
to be.
Did the Swiss government get really tough on drug dealers and addicts? No.
In 1994, Switzerland started an experimental program to sell heroin
addicts the drug at very low cost, even giving it to the addicts who
couldn't afford it. In 2008, 68 percent of the Swiss voted to make the
program permanent.
Have Swiss heroin-addiction rates skyrocketed? No, they have fallen
dramatically.
And so has their overall crime rate.
For the record, I have never even seen cocaine, meth or heroin (except
on TV) let alone have used it.

So 12 felony gardeners have been taken off the streets. Soon
24 people will take their place. Have the Vancouver police solved
all their rapes, robberies and murders? If not, why are they going
after gardeners?
In a marijuana transaction there are willing buyers and willing sellers.
So who is the victim?
Shouldn't your jails and prisons be filled with people who intentionally
harm others against their will?

To the Editor of The Sacramento News & Review:
Thanks for publishing Robert Sharpe's thoughtful letter: "Stimulus for
the cartels" (10-20-11).
Is President Obama on the payroll of the Mexican drug cartels? Al
Capone had thousands of politicians
on his payroll, including President Warren G. Harding, according Ken
Burns' outstanding three part
documentary: Prohibition.
Why else would the Obama Administration make such a dramatic change in
medical marijuana
policy? Since greater than 70 percent of American voters favor
legalizing marijuana for medical
use, how does his new anti-medical marijuana stance fit into his
re-election strategy?
I suspect that the vast majority of drug war cheer leading politicians
are on the payroll of the
Mexican drug cartels--just can't prove it.

To the Editor of The Phoenix New Times:
Re: "IN A STRANGE ABOUT-FACE, THE PRESIDENT TRIES TO HACK MEDICAL
,MARIJUANA OFF AT THE KNEES" (10-20-11).
So why did Obama make the sudden about-face on medical marijuana? The
answer lies in the history of alcohol prohibition.
In Ken Burns' outstanding three part NPR documentary "Prohibition" it
was revealed that the alcohol cartels corrupted all
levels of our government; from cops on the beat all the way to the
Warren G. Harding White House.
Are we supposed to believe that the drug cartels are not following Al
Capone's business model? Are we supposed to
believe that the drug cartels don't have several hundred or even
thousands of politicians on their payroll? The alcohol
cartels did.
So my question is: how much did it take for Obama to make the sudden
about-face on marijuana prohibition" A million
dollars, five million dollars, or perhaps ten million dollars? We will
never know.
