To the Editor of The Journal-Inquirer:
I'm writing about Chris Powell's thoughtful editorial: "Was
contraband law worth Petit girls' lives? No.
Switzerland used to have a very serious heroin addiction problem.
Now their heroin problem is a small fraction of what it used to be.
Did the Swiss government get really tough on drug dealers and addicts?
No.
In 1994, Switzerland started an experimental program to sell heroin
addicts the drug at very low cost, even giving it to the addicts who
couldn't afford it. In 2008, 68 percent of the Swiss voted to make the
program permanent. Have Swiss heroin-addiction rates skyrocketed? No,
they have fallen dramatically. So has their overall crime rate.
Will the United States adopt the Swiss program? Probably not.
Too many people, industries and organizations have a vested financial
interest in continuing the status quo of drug prohibition.

To the editor-
Columnist Donald Kaul, in his column, Ticketing For Marijuana Use Makes
More Sense Today (Wed, Dec 8), misses the boat.
I'm so tired of folks like Kaul who believe that there is some sort of
crime associated with consuming cannabis (marijuana). I find the idea
of ticketing of cannabis consumers a quite a stretch. Why should anyone
receive a ticket? Are they smoking too fast?
If harm is to be the reasoning where are the demonstrable harms? Do we
have bodies of cannabis ODs lined up in our morgues? Do we have
hundreds of thousands of deaths by joint? We certainly have that many
deaths by tobacco cigarettes.
Look Donald, if you don't like pot, keep on not smoking it. But don't
turn the millions of cannabis consumers in the U.S. into criminals
because they choose to not believe the federal government's lies and
decades long campaign of Reefer Madness.
In all of recorded history there is not one case of a cannabis
overdose. The list of those whom have died because of Cannabis
Prohibition on the other hand is far too long. Truly, having cannabis
illegal is government malfeasance at it's worst.
And, Mr. Kaul, if Cannabis Prohibition is justified why is the
industrial hemp version of cannabis illegal? It certainly gets no one
intoxicated and has a ready made industry waiting for domestic
production. End the drug war, RE-legalize cannabis.

To the editor-
In his letter, Impaired Is Impaired (Thur, Dec 9) Terrell Faulk makes
some good points about driving under the influence.
Unfortunately for the politicians all the studies done on cannabis and
driving (even from our own National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration) point out that people drive more cautiously while under
the influence of cannabis. Caution and driving go hand in hand. And I'm
just sayin'... not advocating...
Unfortunately for us, politicians rarely care about knowing the facts,
especially about cannabis. What I do suggest is that studies be done.
Surely Colorado law enforcement has driving courses where the testing
could be conducted? In fact... why not make it a competition?
I for one would gladly smoke a couple of bong hits and go up against
someone drinking alcohol in a monitored study. Wiser bud would beat
Budweiser, hands down.
Please, eight decades of Reefer Madness is enough. It really is time to
expose the lies (and the liars) of Cannabis Prohibition.

To the Editor of The Albany Herald:
Re: "White flag up in war on drugs" by Marc Munroe Dion (12-9-10).
We we re-legalized the drug alcohol in 1933, did we wave a white flag
in front of the Alcohol Cartels? No.
We put them out of business.
