Re: "Cigarette Labels May Get Graphic" front page Nov 11th
Graphic is good, as long as it continues to be honest. So far it has
been a huge success. If we had done that for pot too, we'd all be better
off. Cigarette smoking has plunged, while pot smoking has barely budged.
In the past 10 years cigarette smoking has plunged from 35% to 20%,
while pot has held at about 20%. That's according to the 2009
government-funded "monitoring the future survey" of 12th graders. Pot
smoking enforcement is expensive. It requires investigation, arrest,
prosecution, drug testing and sometimes prison, not to mention the lives
of young people ruined by a felony record or killed entrapping dealers.
Those costs would be better spent on labeling and honest public
relations work. Give the criminal justice system a rest.

To the editor-
I'm compelled to comment on the column, Marijuana Laws Rife With
Complexities (Sat, Oct 13), by Jim Flynn.
Mr Flynn's assessment of the bureaucratic snafu surrounding cannabis
and it's place legally and economically is spot on. But what is even
more convoluted is the process by which we've arrived at this point.
The difficulties of maneuvering cannabis' place in the legal system are
straight out of Lewis Carroll. Especially if we consider the roots of
this legal maze. We must grasp the fact that absolutely no science, no
fact and not even a lick of common sense are part of cannabis' original
prohibition.
In point of fact, nothing more substantial than racially based horror
stories and the intentional fanning of xenophobic fears in the early
20th century U.S. comprise the totality of Cannabis Prohibition's
foundation.
Laws based on racist lies make bad policy. Laws that allow such bigotry
to exist over several generations are in fact, criminal and antipodal
to our nation's core principals of liberty and justice - for all.

Fellow activists,
I'd like to get back on the sent LTE list.
Will someone send me a link or order Major Domo to send me a command?
Many thanks in advance.

To the editor-
Letter writer Sally Thomas rightly chides the media (the Sentinel in
this case) for promulgating misinformation about intoxication in
vehicular accidents before the proof is provided via toxicology
reports.
Unfortunately the very foundations of today's Cannabis Prohibition
contains no "proof."
No facts, no science, nothing in the way of reality ever went into the
banning of this versatile, and useful agricultural staple. To blame
cannabis for an accident before evidence is provided is irresponsible
journalism - at best.
If there is no truth in law, there is no justice. We mock the notion of
"liberty and justice for all" when we are bound by legislated lies. And
journalism should never be a co-conspirator in campaigns of falsehood -
which is what drug policies are today.

Re: "Canada's cigarette label among worst" Nov 15th
Canada can take much credit for reducing premature deaths from smoking
in North America. Tobacco smoking among young Americans has plunged by
almost half in the past 10 years. Both Canada and the U.S. use a medical
model to reduce tobacco smoking. Now it is time to apply that model to
cannabis smoking, which has remained nearly constant among young
Americans. That's according to the 2009 U.S. government-funded
"monitoring the future" surveys of 12th graders. The criminal model of
enforcement is expensive. It requires investigation, arrest,
prosecution, drug testing and sometimes prison, not to mention the lives
of young people ruined by a felony record or killed entrapping dealers.
Those costs would be better spent on labeling and honest public
relations work.
