To the Editor of The East Valley Tribune:
While Arizona and many other states are trying to figure out how to
close their massive budget shortfalls, the Dutch in the Netherlands are
trying to figure out what to do with their closed prisons.
While the Netherlands has a total population of about 16.5 million, it
has only about 12,000 prisoners. On the other hand, the United States
has greater than 2,300,000 total prisoners.
If my math is correct, we in the U. S. have 18.2 fold the Dutch
general population and 191.6 fold their prison population.
Why the glaring disparity? I suggest it’s our drug policies.
In the Netherlands, adult citizens can use, buy and possess small
amounts of marijuana without criminal sanctions. In the United States,
adult citizens are subject to arrest, and jail or prison for buying,
selling or possessing various amounts of marijuana.

Daily Chronicle staff. Your letter:
Editor: I'm writing about: "Authorities seize 1,464 pounds of marijuana
in McHenry County" (12-22-09).
I'm sure that many marijuana growers and sellers are thankful to the
McHenry County Sheriff's Department for this latest marijuana bust and
others like it. Without operations like this, marijuana would be worth
what other easy-to-grow weeds are worth--very little.
Thanks to the Drug Enforcement Administration and other so-called "drug
warriors," the easy-to-grow weed is worth almost as much as pure
gold--and completely tax free.
Any marijuana growers, sellers or traffickers arrested will soon be
replaced. They always are.

Re: Your editorial "Teen drug survey a call for continued action"
Editors -
I applaud local organizations who try to keep kids and drugs apart, but
our national strategy is not helping. NIDA (National Institute of Drug
Abuse) should consider these three questions for their survey.
First, why does cannabis rise while tobacco declines? Surely the threat
of arrest is a stronger motivator that public service announcements by
the U.S. Surgeon General urging kids not to smoke.
Second, why no mention of DAILY pot smoking? NIDA should be more
concerned about kids who smoke pot every day than those who smoke it
only once a month. (Daily use is in Table 4.)
Third, are there really TWO drug wars? One, the violent war known to
Hispanics and Blacks; the other, the gentle one of your editorial. Is
the violent war helping or hurting the gentle one?
Kids are sensitive to adult dishonesty and hypocrisy, seldom more
destructive than in today's federal antidrug policy.

To the Editor of The Chicago Sun-Times:
I'm writing about: "Pot Worth $1.5 Million Seized In Barn
Near Huntley" (12-22-09).
The marijuana traffickers arrested will soon be replaced.
They always are. As long as there are buyers willing
to pay a substantial price for it, somebody will produce it
and somebody else will get it to the willing buyers.
This we can guarantee.
Why not re-legalize marijuana so it can be sold in licensed,
regulated and taxed business establishments? Pot is
substantially less dangerous than either tobacco that
contains nicotine, or alcohol.
People consume marijuana for the same reasons they
consume alcohol. Why not offer adults the much safer
alternative to alcohol?

Re:"Hit Men Kill Mexican Hero's Family"
If done a few days later this would have been the "Christmas Day
Killing", to rival the St. Valentine's Day Massacre of 80 years ago,
when Al Capone took out a rival gang of bootleggers in Chicago.
In 1929 America it was about the money of the illegal market. We know
that because bootlegging stopped when we ended Prohibition. In 2009
Mexico it is still about money. The best way to slow the violence is to
take out the money the same way we did it in 1929: end prohibition.

To the Editor of the Wall Street Journal:
Seventy-five years ago, we ended the violence caused by alcohol
prohibition by ending alcohol prohibition.
The violence in Mexico will continue until we terminate the root
cause: drug prohibition.
Will ending drug prohibition solve our drug problem? No. It will
however, dramatically reduce the U.S. and Mexican violent crime.

Re: "REPORT SAYS AFGHAN DRUG EFFORT LACKS STRATEGY"
No strategy is possible until the strategists enroll -- and pass -- a
university-level course in economics to learn the law of supply and
demand: Constrict supply and the price will rise. Constrict it more and
the price will rise even higher, and so on. It's not a theory; it's a
given, and when the price rises, so does the profit and the violence.
When the strategists finally understand that, build a strategy.
