To the Editors of The Lake County Record-Bee:
I'm writing about Kay Seeeny's "The dangerous side of marijuana" (12-3-09).
I'd like to add that marijuana is relatively safe in that it has
never caused a documented death from its use. However,
marijuana prohibition is very dangerous. Dangerous because
marijuana then is sold only by criminals. Criminals who often
sell other, much more dangerous drugs, and who offer free samples
to their marijuana customers.
For the sake of our children, we need to regulate and control the
sale of marijuana.
Only legal products can be regulated by our government. Only
legal products can be controlled by our government. And only
legal products can be taxed by our government.
Speaking of taxes, it seem to me that non-marijuana users would
be very much in favor of taxing a product that they don't use.
Around here, taxing someone else's vice is very popular.

To the Editor of The Standard Speaker:
I'm writing about Edward A. Pane's letter: "Marijuana use
shouldn't be 'recreational'" (12-6-09). Many products are
consumed for 'recreational' purposes including Coca Cola
and Pepsi. Nobody claims they contain anything of nutritional
value. Should we criminalize these products also?
Why not re-legalize marijuana so it can be sold in licensed,
regulated and taxed business establishments? Pot is
substantially less dangerous than either tobacco that
contains nicotine, or alcohol.
People consume marijuana for the same reasons people
consume alcohol. Why not offer adults the much safer
alternative to alcohol?

To the Editor of The Tribune-Review:
I'm writing about George F. Will's not-so-thoughtful
column: "Rocky Mountain medical high" (11-29-09).
Most plants are good plants. I believe that some plants
such as Poison Ivy and Poison Oak are bad plants.
Millions of people believe that marijuana is a good plant.
Others believe it's a bad plant. My question is: Should people who use
or grow what other people believe to be a bad plant, be arrested and
jailed for doing so?
I believe that hot chili peppers are bad plants. Should people who
eat or grow hot chili peppers be arrested and jailed for doing so?

AMBER KROSEL:
Please forward to the letters editor.
To the Editor of The Northwest Herald:
I'm writing about: "Kane Co. pot bust land 6 in jail"
12-7-09).
I'm sure that many marijuana growers and sellers are thankful to
North Central narcotics task force, and many other agencies
involved for this latest marijuana bust and others like it.
Without operations like this, marijuana would be worth what other
easy-to-grow weeds are worth--very little.
Thanks to the Drug Enforcement Administration and other so-called
"drug warriors," the easy-to-grow weed is worth almost as much as pure
gold--and completely tax free.
Any marijuana traffickers arrested will soon be replaced. They always are.

Jacquelyn Scott's compassionate letter "Article was not factual" speaks
for certifiably sick people. George Will's column "Legalizing medical
marijuana is destructive" is incensed that some people -- especially
kids -- fake illness to get script to smoke pot.
The best solution to both concerns would be to legalize. Then FDA could
do the research blocked for decades by DEA. Patients could make informed
decisions on whether to smoke, kids couldn't fake illness to get script
to get pot, and adults wouldn't need to.

To the Editor of The Centre Daily Times:
I'm responding the the outstanding letter from Mike Meno: "Allow
medical marijuana" (12-9-09).
I'd like to add that one of the medications prescribed by my personal
physician for my arthritis pain and inflammation, has the rare potential
side effect of death. In other words, if I take this medication as
prescribed, I can die as a result.
On the other hand, marijuana has never been documented to kill a single
person in the 5,000 year history of its use.
For me, marijuana is the more effective medication. Right now, if
adult citizens opt for the safer and more effective medication,
they are subject to arrest and being sent to jail with violent criminals.
Is something wrong with this situation? I think so.
Shouldn't adult citizens have the right to choose what goes into their
own bodies in the privacy of their own homes?

Subj: 007 LTE: 'LEGALIZE MARIJUANA? REASONS ARE A SHAM'

Re: Letter 10 Dec "LEGALIZE MARIJUANA? REASONS ARE A SHAM"
The writer is wrong on two fronts: Wrong in attacking the motives of
those she disagrees with, and wrong on the merits of her agrument.
First, her inference that marijuana was outlawed because it is
dangerous. It was put in the most restrictive category of the Controlled
Substances Act of 1970 to hold down those President Nixon blamed for the
social upset of the 1960s. He studiously ignored a study that he,
himself, had commissioned, because it recommended liberalization.
Second, her support for the THC pill, Marinol. Marinol is a sledge
hammer compared to smoked pot. The pill cannot be "titrated" to deliver
the precise amount of THC to obtain relief.
If more Americans would make the effort to dig deeper than official
pronouncements, we'd not need this conversation.
