The sun is out in Rochester and how it lifts and renews one's spirit and
outlook. It simply gives one hope for the future.
Anne came back to the room before yours truly arose this morning,
imagine that, and indicated that Beth had had a pretty restless
night. I jumped in the shower and while in the shower was informed
the oncologist was in Beth's room. Anne headed back to Beth's room
and Kris was there.
When I got there the oncologist fellow was still there and explaining
some of the treatment regimens to Beth and Kris. Beth is a unique
patient for them mostly due to her youth and physical strength, so
they may use a two drug therapy and even consider simultaneous
radiation in hopes of shrinking the tumor. She indicated that she was
going to talk to her supervisor and that they would return hopefully
by noon to discuss options further. It is now 11:34 and we've not
seen them yet. She indicated we would likely be able to have
treatments back home in the QCA so we were pleased at that prospect.
Their hope is to shrink the tumor to allow the Whipple.
Max and Dr. Reid Lombardo were also here and have changed Beth's pain
meds around again to avert the nausea and vomiting and hopefully get
her bladder and tummy awakened. Anne had suggested that Beth might
benefit from Ativan to ease some anxiety to which they agreed. As a
result she has been resting better. They sat and visited with us for
at least an hour. Dr. Reid Lombardo is heavily engaged in pancreatic
cancer research and treatment. She is loving and caring and for
somebody with her responsibilities, she is very generous with her
time. She not only speaks of medicine but we spoke of politics and
history and many other things in life. Truly we have been blessed
with awesome caring doctors and nurses. I don't think I've ever been
witness to such caring caregivers.
During our conversation, we discussed more treatment options and
agreed that whatever is prescribed here, will be followed to the
letter with whomever we choose at home, or we will be coming back
here or finding someone there who will follow it to the letter.
Because Beth is so much younger than most pancreatic cancer patients
seen here, they believe she has an excellent opportunity to respond
to the therapies and shrink this tumor so we can remove it. Our
resolve has stiffened and our hope elevated. Many of you have
referenced my being stubborn, I guess I didn't know it was that
obvious, but it is hard to deny and I will remain so, particularly
when it comes to this. I won't budge.
Again we thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. You hold us up
and keep us in this fight. We wish you all a Merry Christmas from the
Wehrman clan. Randy

I can't think of any thing, but thanks much for offering.
Beth's family is there, including all the kids, I think, including
one who is also a RN like Beth. She appears to be receiving
outstanding, even well beyond the call of duty, care from the Mayo folks.

Richard,
I am not surprised by the level of care. Mayo's guiding principle is the Needs of the Patient come first. We are reminded of that daily and it is a common thing to see people helping.
Even though there is no statement about cannabis from the mayo they do try hard to do the best for the patient.
