Some of you may know Beth from conferences. Here is a picture Media
Awareness Project volunteer Beth Wehrman at the Drug Policy Alliance
Conference, 2005, Long Beach, CA http://www.mapinc.org/images/BethatDPA.jpg

Some of you may know Beth as the needle exchange lady of Lifeguard
Harm Reduction Services http://www.lifeguardonline.org/ of the
Peoria/Pekin, Galesburg, and Quad Cities areas of Illinois and Iowa.
You may remember the reaction of Peoria and their newspaper to her
services in 2002 as written about here
http://www.mapinc.org/alert/0240.html and here
http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle-old/236/peoria.shtml

Now Beth needs your prayers, good vibes, and support. More on how you
may send her messages below.

Yesterday the below was posted to Beth's webpage in the discussiion
area at http://www.carepages.com

Cancer Sucks

Randal Wehrman December 21, 2007 at 03:45 PM CST

At approximately 11:30 A.M., Dr. Reid Lombardo's nurse called to
inform us that they were closing and they would come get us for a
consultation. Dr. Reid Lombardo sat with us and cried with us,
something I've never seen a surgeon do. She told us that everything
was good until she got to the mesenteric vein and artery and that the
tumor had encroached upon them preventing her from separating the
tumor from them. So she had to close.

This was not the news we were hoping for, obviously. We will now wait
to consult with oncologist to hear their recommendations, but Dr.
Reid Lombardo thought we would probably try to shrink the tumor with
radiation and chemo and then we would check again to see if the tumor
were shrunk enough to proceed with the Whipple. A resident assisting
told us they would probably try to get her released before Christmas
if possible. We are a stubbon lot and will never give in to this
dispicable disease.

I will further say that as I sit here and wonder what the future
holds for Beth and our family, I am appalled at a Government and a
President who continue to spend billions in Iraq and spend so very
little on cancer research. I wonder how W would feel were he in my
shoes!! Our foreign aid to Israel is something like $10 billion and
cancer research for our citizens is only $6 billion. What is wrong
with this picture?

Please keep the good thoughts coming. They really help. Beth is still
pretty groggy. The first thing she said to me was, "it's too early
for me to be out, I know what that means and I'm pissed!" Obviously,
she won't quit.

The whipple procedure is discussed here
http://www.mayoclinic.org/pancreatic-cancer/whippleprocedure.html

Beth is under the care of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and is
at Saint Marys Hospital http://www.mayoclinic.org/hospitals-rst/ but
may, as the above message says, be home for Christmas.

Friends, please, our Beth very much appreciates your good thoughts,
as the note above says. Sending them is very easy. Just follow these
instructions:

Her message board is:

http://www.carepages.com

At the upper right corner of the webpage is a link to a page on which
to register, which you must do.

Once registered you may use the link in the same location to visit
her board page section. You must enter her name, one word, case
sensitive, as follows:

BethWehrman

This will take you to her pages. I had a little trouble finding the
actual Message Board but it is there, and it is where you may post
messages to her.

Yell to me if you are having difficulty accessing the page, and I
will try to help. Or if you wish, send me an email and I will post it
to the message board for you.

Richard

When Cannabis is available to adults in any store that carries cigars or whiskey, the problem will be solved.

"Smoking weed is 5X more likely to cause cancer than nicotine. And yes it's in a non-government medical journal--look it up."

Hey, Rockwood, YOU look it up; it's all in the latest TASHKIN study. Cannabis, even when SMOKED, [c.f. vaporized] PREVENTS cancer. Even for tobacco smokers.

Marinol's THC costs 10x what the THC in high-grade herb at $400 an ounce costs.

Marinol is pure synthetic THC, the "dreaded" psychoactive component (which is ostensibly why pot is illegal, eh?).

Marinol excludes the other 59+ cannabinoids, some of which mitigate the "high" caused by THC, some effective neuroprotectants, some effective against cancer, alzheimers, stroke, and more.

Google thc+tumor+1974 if you have ANY doubts, or think the government "is here to help you".

The Federal law is a damned lie. Look it up. What fool believes a law that excludes tobacco and alcohol and places the least toxic substance on the "controlled" list in "Schedule I"?

Beyond its blatant abrogation of the Tenth Amendment, having Cannabis in Schedule I makes the Controlled Substances Act patently absurd.

If there is anything I can do for her while she is in Rochester I would be happy to help.

I live in the area.

Subj: 006 An update on Beth from her http://www.carepages.com page
From: Richard Lake <>
Date: Sun, 23 Dec 2007 12:37:34 -0800

11 December 23, 2007 at 02:24 PM CST
Dr. Reid Lombardo came by to see us today and brought her stepson
Jordan to meet us all. What a very nice young man who wants to fly
commercial airplanes when he grows up. She spent an hour or so with
us, much of time spent talking about many things other than medicine.
She was very complimentary about our family and was pleased to meet
us all despite the circumstances. She and Max are still trying to get
Beth out of the hospital for Christmas, but I am not terribly optimistic.

Beth is not taking enough fluids by mouth to leave so they continue
to hydrate her with IV's. She has taken some water and tried a
popsicle and some flavored ice, but that is the extent of it. She has
voided twice, however, but not sufficiently to empty her bladder. It
appears her obdominal organs are not waking up after the anesthesia
meaning that her bladder and bowels are still somewhat paralyzed from
the anesthesia. So it may well be the day after Christmas before she
is released at a minimum, but we will remain hopeful that we can do so.

The next question is whether or not we can drive home and what the
weather is doing. I don't think it a wise idea to get stuck in a snow
bank right now!

She is up walking with regularity and is to make 8 trips up and down
the halls today. She is moving better and with less pain, but still
quite slowly.

I can't imagine that she will be discharged tomorrow but will try to
remain optimistic about so doing. I suppose in the grand sceam of
things, Christmas is just another day and if we don't get out for
that day, it's no big deal. Better to leave when ready than to leave
and have trouble. She seems to be lethargic and indiffernent today
which concerns me. If I push too hard she resists so will keep my
mouth shut and hope that she ralleys.

Happy Holidays from the Wehrman clan. Please keep the responses coming.

Randy
