When Prosecutors Deceive
Did the Feds Frame Bryan Epis?
By FRED GARDNER
The judge who sentenced Bryan Epis to 10 years in federal prison now
realizes that Epis was the victim of prosecutorial misconduct,
according to Brenda Grantland, the lawyer handling Epis's appeal. Epis,
38, was convicted in 2002 of conspiracy to cultivate more than 1,000
cannabis plants. He was granted bail in August 2004, after serving more
than 25 months. The government is intent on sending him back to prison.

Here's a just submitted LTE from our most excellent colleague in that SoCal
- - Harry Fisher.
Harry gets printed every few weeks somewhere from sending out just a
handful of letters. The sent below is right in the vein he normally writes
and demonstrates that one need not be a repository for all kinds of Facts
and Statistics in order to create a very usuable commentary.

In a letter on 12/15, Dr. William G. Hobbs wrote: "Smoking one joint a day
for 30 days will lower your IQ consistently." If we give Hobbs his head
and assume that smoking one joint a day for an entire year will lower your
IQ by a single point, then what will 4 joints a day for 30 years do? It
must mean that my present IQ is in low flight somewhere between minus 30
and minus 20. I suppose I should be glad that I am still capable of
putting on my pants in the morning, let alone mastering the daunting
challenge of sending email. In fact, I must be a medical miracle, the
fitting counterpoint to Hobbs' medical nonsense.

As one who has smoked considerably more than "one joint a day" since
the late '60's, I find Dr. Hobbs' letter of 15 December ludicrous.
Before ingesting ANY drug, herb or solvent one is well advised to study
the effects thereof. I did.
Before slandering all of us who enjoy cannabis, writers should study
science rather than drug-war propaganda. I suggest Dr. Hobbs might
start with Google searches of "Francis L. Young" and "Shafer commision"
for his edification.

Anyone who feels their publication rate to be less than they would
like should try searching the published letters archive
http://www.mapinc.org/lte/
There are thousands of great examples of what gets published.
The Style Guides at
http://www.mapinc.org/resource/
are also very helpful.
Good luck! :-)
