It's OK, Josh!
Being an editor at MAP is not easy. We all make mistakes.
Just minutes ago I posted an editorial as being from the Mercury, The
(Australia)
I caught it after the Drug News Digest came out, and said, well, a stronger
word that "Oops." What I get for editing before I have finished my first
cup of coffee, and am still not awake.
Thankfully, well really thankfully do to the amazing skill of Matt Elrod
who has probably written as much code as a few of the mikeysoft
millionaires, just to make our news clipping system work -- thankfully we
editors can fix problems with archived items before too many folks think we
are really spaced out (none of us would ever be spaced out, would we?) I
got the item changed to reflect the proper paper - San Jose Mercury News
(CA) as can be seen at http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v04/n1729/a09.html
Thank you so much for being a part of the editor at team, Josh.
It has been one busy week for us, for sure. I suspect some of us will spend
much of the weekend catching up. I know I will.
Richard
p.s. I will most likely make the NORML conf. in S.F. in April. Hope to see
you there!

Subj: 003 Raich v. Ashcroft in the news
From: Richard Lake <>
Date: Sun, 05 Dec 2004 02:38:06 -0500
So far for the past week the volunteer newshawks and editors at MAP have
processed and archived 98 news clippings about medical cannabis from United
States newspapers. Of those 77 refer specifically to Raich.
As we have stated at our alert "Raich - A LTE Writing Opportunity"
http://www.mapinc.org/alert/0297.html "Seldom have we seen as much press as
the coverage of the Supreme Court hearing on Raich v. Ashcroft last Monday.
We suspect that it is a rare newspaper that has not printed something. Thus
you have an opportunity to write letters on the subject not only to
newspapers for which MAP has archived clippings, but also to your local
newspapers." See the alert for LTE writing ideas.
Below are links to a selection of the week's Raich v. Ashcroft news
clippings. Those with Edu: in the subject line are from student newspapers.

Subj: 004 Users who support prohibition
From:

The current DrugSense Weekly (http://www.drugsense.org/current.htm) has a
story on legal mushroom sales in the UK which ends with an interesting
comment by a cannabis user from prohibitionist France:
...There is talk of changing the law so mushrooms will no longer be
legal, said Ares Michaelides, a police community support officer who
stood not far from a shroom stall.
But advocates say that mushrooms do not foster anti-social behavior.
Instead, users tend to trip in the privacy of their homes.
"You have to prioritize," Michaelides said.
Surprisingly, some users take a different view. A couple from Paris,
Caroline Gojon and Francois Boyon, browsed the stalls one day last week.
Boyon has used mushrooms before; for Gojon, that experience still lies in
the future.
"I think yes, it should be illegal," Boyon said as he shopped. "It's like
cannabis. I smoke, but I think it's normal that it's illegal. If drugs
were legal, the whole world would be (messed) up."

Unfortunately this view is shared by others, although it seems less
prevalent than simple apathy.
