One word. Money! And the time/manpower that money would buy to help organize such an effort. We do a heck of a lot with volunteer efforts but we could do a heck of a lot more if there were funding for such projects.

Re a grant request to MPP? Go for it if you have the time and talent to organize a program like this. The deadline for the current grant cycle is Jan 1 so you'd have to be very fast. Our grant request is already in. Be forewarned start up orgs with little track record don't have a very good chance of obtaining grant funds. In fact in my experience it's not exactly a walk in the park for major groups with phenomenal track records.

How much money does it take for Kampia or Stroup, et al to write a letter to
celebrities outlining the ugent need for their support and telling them what
they can do?

Not a lot, I'd imagine.

Richard & Matt & MAPstars,

I was wondering if there is a way that the Source Directory can list Edu
newspapers together at the Source Directory:

http://www.mapinc.org/media.htm

I was looking at College Newspapers in the USA:

http://www.newspapers.com/College.htm

There are many US College newspapers not listed at the Source Directory.

I was thinking there must be a college kid out there somewhere who would
enjoy newshawking the US college/university newspapers.

It would be easier to newshawk College Newspapers in the USA if all of the
newspapers were listed on a one page list.

Yes, John was the "political" Beatle, but...

see ExBeatle McCartney says legalize cannabis

URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v97/n432/a04.html?1773

I did a quick search and came across these sites:

His charitable concerns:

http://www.mplcommunications.com/mccartney/charity.htm

His personal website:

http://www.paulmccartney.com/

has a Message board.

I assume they are legit.?

It wouldn't be easy to contact Sir Paul McCartney but if there's a will
there might be a way.

Why not?

Herb

p.s. According to an article "Rock and roll knows no age" in the Vancouver
Sun, December 21, 2002:

"Sir Paul McCartney was the top touring artist in the world for 2002,
raking in $126.1 million, according to Billboard Boxscores. All figures
were calculated in US dollars."

Surely, Paul would consider donating to a worthy cause like DrugSense.

We just need "names" (i.e. Executive Directors of reform org.'s) to take the
time to find contact info and write letters outlining the need for support,
cite past charitable work of the celebrity, and then ask!

They probably won't give if we don't ask. So... why aren't we asking? Or
are we?

Peace,
Tom

try, try again, as they say.

I heard that he wants his own coat of arms on the news.

I don't want to discourage this sort of activity in any way but there has been more thna one individual that has tried to raise funds on behalf of MAP by approaching wealthy people and/or large philanthropic corporations independently so far with no results. In most McCartney and other wealthy people have foundations and rather complex procedures for requesting grants.

By all means go for it if you have the time and resources. No one would be more pleased than I if lightening strikes. I don't even know how one would go about trying to contact these people.

Believe me when I tell you that ED's of most reform orgs are up to their eyeballs in various methods of trying to raise funds. Same old same old. Too much to do to little time to do it.

While I appreciate the enthusiasm and ideas the very last thing most reform leaders need are ideas of how they should spend their time. Most are utterly overwhelmed. I have been for more than 7 years. It's a constant struggle and balancing act to decide whether to engage in fundraising activity or in efforts to promote reform ideals or pay the bills and do the bookkeeping or....you get the picture.

I hear a few good ideas a week. I rarely hear ideas on where/how to get the manpower/money to implement new ideas. To busy to raise money to hire help to get more done. Kind of a Catch-22 eh? Welcome to the reform movement.

What if I or someone like myself spends the time writing the letter and
finding out the contact info. Do you think the ED's would at least take a
few seconds to read it over, put their signature on the bottom of it, and
maybe pay 30 something cents for postage? Maybe following it up with a
phone call would be good too.
