Clinton, in interview, says pot smoking should be legal
LOS ANGELES, Dec 6 (Reuters) - President Bill Clinton, who tried to avoid the
stigma of smoking marijuana by saying he never "inhaled," tells Rolling Stone
magazine that people should not be jailed for using or selling small amounts
of the drug.
In an interview with the rock magazine released on Wednesday, Clinton was
asked if he thought that "people should go to jail for using or even selling
small amounts of marijuana?"
Clinton, who raised eyebrows in the 1992 presidential primary campaign when
he admitted trying the drug but adding he didn't inhale, told the magazine,
"I think that most small amounts of marijuana have been decriminalized in
some places, and should be."
He added, "We really need a reexamination of our entire policy on
imprisonment. Some people deliberately hurt other people and they ought to be
in jail because they can't be trusted to be on the streets. Some people do
things that are so serious that that they have to be put in jail to
discourage other people from doing similar things.
"But a lot of people are in prison because they have drug problems or alcohol
problems and too many of them are getting out
- -- particularly out of state systems -- without treatment, without education,
without skills, without serious efforts at job placement."

Good one Dave. I'm not sure they are totally wrong but their approach
sure sucks. Maybe we oughta send pix of Esequiel Hernandez, Alberto
Sepulveda, Peter McWilliams etc, ad nauseum....
You know, just to balance things out...
(From the website)
"Every year irresponsible, criminal substance abusers kill
thousands of Americans... more than all the Americans killed
during the Vietnam War. In fact, more Americans have lost
their lives to criminal conduct than all the GI's killed in all of
our wars."
Wow! I might switch sides after reading that...

Okay, so the subject was a lyric from an old Boy George song, "The War
Song". But war is never a good thing. In a war like this, who are we
rooting for? I certainly don't want the coca plantations wiped out. I
certainly don't want to see the government "win" the war on some drugs,
even though we all know it can't be won completely.
I guess maybe I'm not rooting for any of them. I'm not sure how much
marijuana is grown in Columbia, but in the case of pot, I think either
more people are growing their own or maybe we're just finding out that
more people have been growing their own. If they stamp out one big
operation, they will end up with dozens of smaller operations, probably
spread out over many different countries, resulting in the need for more
"deals" between governments.
It has been my theory for some time that perhaps part of the reason the
government goes against all logic and reason to keep drugs illegal is
that perhaps they're actually afraid of the drug cartels and the Mafia.
Certainly the mob gets a lot of money from prostitution and casinos, but
they almost certainly get megabucks from drug trade. If drugs were
legalized, the mob would suffer like they did when booze was
relegalized. What's the real reason behind the continuation of crazy
drug laws? Are politicians and law makers being blackmailed? Are there
Mafia ties with the media to make it look like drugs are worse than they
really are? We already know the corporate side of the issue. I imagine
that Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds don't want marijuana legalized unless
it's only legal for THEM to grow it and sell it. I personally don't
understand this logic because anybody can grow potatoes, but most people
just buy theirs at the store.
So being the optimist -- always looking for some light at the end of the
tunnel -- perhaps the government hopes to topple Columbian power so we
can grow drugs here in America. is that a fantasy or what? Could be
America's next big cash crop. I don't know how well coca would grow
here, but we definitely have enough land for marijuana. Get our own
farmers set up to grow it (secretly of course -- we have an ulterior
motive being involved with Columbia) and then at a key point in the
timeline, suddenly come out in favor of legalizing drugs and urge other
countries to do the same as our farmers get their first crops
harvested. Then our Gross National Product goes up, the national trade
deficit goes down, at least for a while until other countries start
growing their own. :-)

Ethan-
either that or our government IS the drug cartels and the Mafia? Untaxed
sales of 400 billion dollars (8% of global trade) is hard to resist.
Why dump such a profitable symptom? Especially when the laws in place
allow you to jail those most likely to be dissenters? Just a thought
(heaven forbid I should think such an idea could have any truth to
it)...

Well, nobody wants to cast aspersions on any effort to give solace to the
victims of violent crime, least of all me. It's hit me and mine too. Sure
Trogydites become addicts. Racists become addicts. Murderers and rapists
become addicts. The problem is that good people become addicts as well. It's
the same as with alcohol or nicotine. If the murderer was a smoker it
doesn't mean that the victim was a victim of nicotine. In fact, it's reputed
to be worse with alcohol. Now there's a drug that actually does have the
potential to loose a little mayhem.

I check the site, and the addresses are correct according to the information
there but...
