(From a libertarian email list)

From: "James Landrith" <>

I recently sent the following response to a survey being conducted by Todd
Hartley's An American Resolution radio show regarding legalization of drugs
to air this Sunday as well as a live WebCast. This is another opportunity
for the LP to get it's message across regarding The Drug War. The best
response to the question gets the fourth spot on the show. My response and
Todd's email to me are below for those interested. Those interested in
responding can feel free to contact directly via his website, email address,
or phone number which are below. It would be nice to have some LP
representation on this one. I'm no expert on this issue, but I'm sure
someone on this list is.

Dear Todd:

Legalize drugs! Drug use is a victimless "crime" and none of the
government's business. The War on Drugs has become nothing more than an
excuse for corrupt police and prosecutors to: seize property from the
citizenry (without ever charging or convicting the citizen); to employ
racist, racial profiling schemes that punish appearance and not action; and
for U.S. Customs officials to commit sexual abuse (through invasive body
cavity searches) of women, as recently exposed in Chicago at the O'Hare
Airport.

For more information on ending the drug war, see:
http://www.lp.org/intro/wod.html

On a personal note, in 1976, my grandfather was murdered. One of the two
murderers is already free, due to prison overcrowding. Seems that the State
of Illinois needed more room for potsmokers.

Sincerely,

OK, I'm running an opinion poll amongst our friends ...

Are you for or against legalizing drugs? E-mail me back and I will announce
the totals on my show this Sunday!

I heard from a friend at KTAR that they haven't been getting much response
from audience members concerning An American Resolution. Sunday is my last
try-out day and I really, really need your help. Together we know enough
people and I could desperately use a phone call or two from you and your
closest friends mentioning how much you enjoy the show and that you'd like
to see An American Resolution become a part of KTAR's weekday line-up.
(please us your own words)

Please leave a message on their answering machine suggestion line - (602)

We've got a great show this Sunday! We're solving the War on Drugs.
Guests Include:

That's this Sunday on KTAR News Radio 620, from Noon - 2pm MST

Here's the Sunday live talk line - (602) 277-KTAR (5827)

Also I will be hosting Bill Straus' show this Friday afternoon from 1-4pm on
KXAM 1310. And would love to hear from any of you.

Anyone get this article? Got an Email address? NY Magazine is not in our
media contact list (but I think it is a NY Times insert isn't it? This could
easily slip under our radar as it probably doesn't mention drugs but it is
definitely worth and Focus Alert if we can get it hawked.

The current issue of NY Magazine features Judge Judy as one of the most
important NY'ers of the year and has a short profile of her, no doubt done
long before her stupid remarks became known. It couldn't hurt to write to
them. I'm sure they will print lots of letters complaining about their
choices.

Subj: ABC's 20/20 & Women in the Shadows
From: "kim hanna" <>
Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 06:33:19 PST

sorry for posting this so late; it was on Dec. lst. ABC's 20/20 had an
online discussion of the show for a few days after the show and there were
many, many notes posted (you had to be signed-up to the GO network (part of
ABC). Most people were talking about how 20/20 had used the women
(prostitutes) for their show and then just casting them off. Not much
discussion about the DRUG issues and prostitution or aids in the comments I
checked out. According to ABC's website; people may contact the 20/20
producers and reporters by joining these comment boards after a show; so it
may be an effective way to reach the NEWS media with our message.
I thought the show dramatically illustrated the drug problem. Duran Ruiz
needed $300-$400. a day of heroin, was living on the street and in a
cardboard box and doing around 15 TRICKS a day at $30. each and sharing
needles with other drug addicts.
She was NOT eligible for drug treatment in CA because she had a
DRUG--FELONY conviction.
I've since tried to find the story at the ABC NEWS website search and it
seems to be deleted; though many other 20/20 shows are there, many going
back to earlier in 1999.

MSNBC just carried a story "Marijuana Linked to Cancer" in which Dr. Bob
Arnot, NBC's resident "medical expert" told about a new UCLA study that
purportedly proves that marijuana smoking causes head and neck cancers.

Arnot made several drugwarrior-type statements, such as whereas Marinol is
perfectly safe, longtime mj smokers should immediately get checked for head
and neck tumors......

Please watch for and newshawk all published drug-policy related news to MAP.

Subj: Re: CNN Spreads more Prohibitionist Propaganda
From: Richard Lake <>
Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 20:17:36 -0500

Hi, Norm and Friends

Of course CNN headline news carried the story, which was distributed by the
wire services also. It was presented as real research - so they had no
reason not to.

But I would not agree that CNN is a regular source of prohibitionist
propaganda, at least not when we look at the track record of the other
major U.S. networks.

Having watched CNN's track record since their coverage in Dec. 96 of the
Kzar's 'Cheech and Chong' medicine press conference, when for of their
shows provided extensive coverage that more than balanced the Kzar's press
conference - with respected experts that did not agree with the Kzar thru
to today, I find that CNN on the balance is critical of the WoD more often
than not.
And significantly more often than the other networks.

In this case it is the research that needs to be evaluated, not the media
which carried the story. Indeed, the wire service versions of this story
are even more frightening. Our job should be to show the media why this
research is 'junk science' - as they really had no way of evaluating the
public announcements of the research quickly, IMHO.

I think a fair number of CNN's really good shows may be in the CRRH video
archives.
